You should try to keep your baby in a rear facing car seat for as long as possible but when your baby reaches 9kg (13kg in a group 0+ seat), or their head reaches the top of the seat, it may be time to start thinking about moving them to the next stage car seat. Group 1 seats will take over from an infant carrier and will generally last until your child is around 4 years old (18kg or 40lbs). They will be forward-facing and tend to be much heavier and larger than your child’s first seat and as they don’t have a carrying handle, they aren’t designed to be quite so portable. It is intended for a group 1 seat to remain securely placed in your car using the car’s seat belts, or in some cases, fixed points.
